Fantastic Four MCU Casting Revealed: Is Doctor Doom Finally Confirmed?
A combination of the release of the highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps, the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially welcomed its First Family. Although the main cast has been a hot topic of conversation, the movie’s post-credits scene has shocked fans by essentially proving the long-awaited entrance of Doctor Doom, the MCU’s next big villain, with an unexpected face behind the mask.
Who would play Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), & Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) has been the subject of months of conjecture. Now that the movie is out, viewers can finally see their genesis tale play out in a 1960s-style retrofuturistic environment. Initial responses have been conflicting; some have praised its emotional core and visual style, whilst some have found the pacing and some CGI components to be mediocre. But the real excitement comes from a revelation that might completely change the MCU.
Four years since the Fantastic Four’s first beyond adventure, the movie’s mid-credits scene provides a tantalizing glimpse into the future. Throughout the film, Sue Storm is accompanied by her strong son, Franklin Richards, whose marvelous abilities are gently displayed. Sue is just leaving the room when a shadowy figure emerges and starts talking to Franklin. Even though the figure’s face stays concealed, it appears that Doctor Victor Von Doom is already here in response to the recognizable green cloak and, most importantly, the metallic mask they are holding on to.
However, the most shocking revelation? The long-rumored, nearly unreal rumor has been verified: Robert Downey Jr. will be making a return to the MCU as Dr. Doom. Even before Marvel changed their overall villain plans due to legal issues involving Jonathan Majors, the actor who played Kang the Conqueror, this casting had been alluded to for a while. Even prior to the release of Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, Kevin Feige had hinted at conversations with Downey on this “audacious idea”.
The post-credits scene deftly handles Matt Shakman’s earlier declaration that Doom will not appear in his Fantastic Four: First Steps, paving the way for Doom’s spectacular debut in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 & Avengers: Secret Wars by 2027. Fantastic Four’s subdued yet powerful opening points to a planned introduction of the powerful Latverian tyrant. His fascination with reality-bending mutant Franklin Richards suggests a profound, intimate tie-up with the Fantastic Four & prepares the audience for a really dramatic showdown.
